Reinkens, Joseph Hubert
(1821–96)
   Bishop.
   Reinkens was born at Burtscheid near Aachen and he was appointed Rector of Breslau University in 1865. Strongly opposed to the decree of papal infallibility passed at the First Vatican Council in 1870, he joined döllinger in protest and was excommunicated. In 1873 he became the first Bishop of the German ‘Old Catholics’. He was consecrated by Bishop Hermann Heykamp of the Old Catholic Church of Utrecht and in 1876 in his turn, he consecrated Edward Herzog as the first Old Catholic Bishop of Switzerland. He dedicated the rest of his life to the new organisation.
